Critical book


PREFACE

We should gratitude to our almighty GOD since He always gives us his grace so the writer can finish this writing with the title “The Noun Clause”. This critical text book is purposed to fulfill structure project in order to learn the each topic more deeply. So the students were asked to make a critical report book. Hopefully, the students try to find out the material from any sources in order to support each topic which is chosen. This can be a requirement of formative test for structure class.


As long as the process writing, many of our surroundings who participate either material or supports so this noun clause can be written as well. That’s why in this good occasion, the writer wishes to thank for Mr. Johannes as the lecturer of structure 3 in English Literature A 2011 class. He has given us some descriptions about the material that we want to analyze and criticize, even guide us to have the material. We also thank for our parents not only as the facilitator and donator for this noun clause writing, but also the best motivators for us. We also thank to our friends who do support us to make the writing, even give us some ideas to have this critical report book better. Many still who support us as long as the writing process of the noun clause that we can not mention one by one but it doesn’t mean we forget your kindness for us. We say thanks so much once again.
We hope this writing has good benefits for the readers in order to learn grammar specially noun clause. We focus this writing for English learner. It is useful not only for us to get the point for formative structure but also the reader as English learner. Hopefully, this can help the readers understand about the “Noun Clause” more easily.
The writer do realizes that this writing about the noun clause is still far from the perfection, so the writer needs the readers’ comments and suggestion in order to have the better writing in critical about the noun clause in the future.

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION
I.1 BACKGROUND
The writing is about “THE NOUN CLAUSE”, we provide explanations about the noun clause which is based on any sources in order to have the more clear explanation. We are asked to choose one of the topics which have been prepared in order to fulfill the formative test structure. We want to explain the material of noun clause clearly and it can be easily understood. Hopefully, this writing is a media for us to learn more about the topic namely the noun clause. We think that noun clause is an exact topic to discuss because we never still discussed before. It is better we can show the explanation to be better starting.
I.2 PURPOSE
This writing is about the noun clause is purposed to finish the formative test as the way the lecturer of structure 3 in English Literature A 2011 has told us. We also want to purpose the writing can be useful for all the readers as English learners. May god they can understand about the noun clause more easily and deeply, because we try to provide the material of noun clause briefly so that it is easily understood. We have the references so we can choose the best way to know the noun.
I.3 BENEFIT
This noun clause is about the noun clause has benefits for the writer and readers. The writer needs this writing for requirement structure 3 formative test. Besides, the writer hopes this can enlarge the writer’s knowledge. The knowledge is really very important for every English learner as the writer. The writer also hopes this writing can be useful for the readers namely to be an easier way to understand the noun clause material. Hopefully, this writing can be useful for the readers to analyze the better book to learn the English specially noun clause.



CHAPTER II CONTENT
2.1 THE NOUN CLAUSE
In a noun clause, the full subject and predicate are retained, but the structure is changed by the addition of a special introductory word, by a special word order or by both. These changes permit the noun clause to fill the same positions and to serve the same functions as nouns.
 Types and Functions of Noun Clauses
Noun clauses may be classified according to the kinds of sentences from which they are derived statements, questions, requests, exclamations.
1.      Noun Clause is Derived from: a statement
Introductory Conjunction: that
Function of Clause:
ü  Subject: That coffee grows in Brazil is well known to all.
ü  Subject after it subjective complement: It is well known that coffee grows in Brazil.
ü  Object of verb: I know that coffee grows in Brazil.
ü  Appositive: His belief that coffee grows in Brazil is correct.
2.      Noun Clause  is Derived from: a question
Introductory Conjunction: whether and if
Function of Clause:
ü  Subject: Whether he gets the money doesn’t concern me.
ü  Subjective Complement: The question is whether he will get the money.
ü  Object of verb: Do you know whether he will get the money.
ü  Object of preposition: We were concerned about whether he would get the money.
3.      Noun Clause is derived from: interrogative word question
Introductory Conjunction: Who, What, which, when, why, where, why how
Function of Clause:
ü  Subject: How he gets the money is his own affair.
ü  Subjective Complement: The question is how he will get the money.
ü  Object of Verb: I don’t know how he will get the money.
ü  Object of Preposition: We were concerned about how he would get the money.
4.      Noun Clause is Derived from: Request
Introductory Conjunction: That
Function of Noun Clause:
ü  Object of Verb: He suggested that I write the letter soon.
5.      Noun Clause is Derived from: Exclamation

Function of Clause:                 
ü  Object of verb: I hadn’t realized what a pretty girl she was.
ü  Object of preposition: We talked about what a pretty girl she was.
6.      Noun Clause is Derived from: Conversational Reponses
Introductory Conjunction: That
Function of Noun Clause
ü  Substituting so: I think so that Ana is from Peru.
Think, Believe, Guess, Suppose and Hope are frequently followed so in conversational English in response to a yes/no question. They are alternatives to yes, no, or I don’t know.
7.      Noun Clause is Derived from: Quoted Speech
Introductory Conjunction: That
Function of Noun Clause: Jane said “Cats are fun to watch”
8.      Noun Clause is Derived from Reported Speech
Introductory Conjunction of Noun Clause: that
Function of Noun Clause:
ü  Reported Speech is giving the idea of a speaker’s words. Not all of the exact words are used; pronouns and verb forms may change.  For example, Ann said that she was hungry.
9.      Noun Clause is Derived from: Common Reporting Verbs
Introductory Conjunction of Noun Clause: That
Function of Noun Clause:
ü  The reporting verbs which are usually followed immediately by a noun clause ‘tell’, for example: Ann told me that she was hungry.
ü  The question verbs namely ask, want to know, wonder and inquire, for instance: she want to know if I was tired.
ü  The replies verbs namely answer and reply, for example: I answered Ann that I wasn’t tired.
2.2 THE EXERCISES
The writers try to provide some sums in order to be media for the readers for having the exercises. The exercises may help the English learners to understand the materials of English and specially, for this section for noun clause material. The exercises cover wholly the explanations of the noun clause and hopefully, every reader can understand the noun clause explanation in this writing.

3.1 CONCLUSION
The writer concludes that the noun clause is consisted of subject and predicate which function is as an object and complement of a sentence. The Noun clause is concerned with the Question words and That as introductory conjunctions. The quoted speech is also included in to the noun clause.
3.2 SUGGESTION
We suggest that the noun clause should be learned and it will be easily understood by having more exercises. The writer tries to help the readers as English learners namely the writer prepares some sums to be solved. We believe that the more exercises we have, the more easily to be understood.
